Stages of Competition and Required Documents
The Jury

The "Prize Competition for Research on History of Banking and Finance" is organised by the Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Centre in cooperation with European Association of Banking History (EABH) and History Foundation of Turkey (HF). It aims to encourage academic research into the last 200 years of history of Turkish banking and finance, with the hope of establishing a tradition in this field. The first competition, which was held in 2000-2001 was sponsored by Ottoman Bank, whereas the current sponsor is Garanti Bank.

Purpose

To encourage academic research on the last 200 years of the history of Turkish banking, finance and economy, and to establish a tradition in this field.

Scope

The competition will be held in 4 categories on subjects pertaining to Turkish banking, finance and economic history since 19th century:

Scientific Articles
Master's Theses
Doctoral Dissertations
Monographs

Conditions for Participation

The competition is open to all Turkish and foreign researchers and academicians.
Employees of the Garanti Bank, Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Centre, History Foundation, European Association of Banking History (EABH) are not eligible to participate in the competition.
A participant may submit an entry in more than one category, whereas more than one entry in each category is not permitted.
A scientific article or a monograph that is the joint work of two or more persons is acceptable.
The use of Ottoman Bank Archives is not mandatory.
The entries should be either in Turkish, English, French or German should be used.
Scientific articles, theses and dissertations are not required to have been published.
In order to be eligible, the master's and doctoral theses are required to have been accepted during the academic year of 2001-2002 or 2002-2003 by the universities to which they have been submitted. The monographs, on the other hand, will have to be published in the years 2001-2003.

Prizes

One prize will be given in each category:

Scientific Article

15.000.000.000 TL

The jury may grant a special prize to one of the entries prepared through exclusive use of the documents in the Ottoman Bank Archives. The winner of the special prize will receive 75% of the prize designated for the respective category.

The jury may also provide honorary mentions, which will not exceed three. The winners of the honorary mentions will receive 10% of the prize designated for the respective category.

The jury has the right not to give a prize in any of the categories.

If more than one entry is judged to be worthy of the award in any category, the prize shall be shared equally.

Legal Rights

The participant is responsible for the protection of all the intellectual property rights of his/her entry. However, the copyright of the awarded and unpublished entries shall belong to Ottoman Bank Archives and Research Centre.

History Foundation and the Centre may choose to publish the winning entries hitherto unpublished. The decision shall be communicated to the authors within a year following the announcement of the results.

Announcement of Results

All entries shall be retained by the Centre and shall not be returned to their authors.

An awards ceremony will be organised in December 2003.

The prize winners shall be introduced to the press and the public through the ceremony and other activities.
