March 28, 2006 – Assist. Prof. Christoph Neumann
The Mission Civilisatrice of the Servet-i Fünun: Ahmet İhsan and his Journal
In this talk, Neumann addresses the role played in the Turkish printing world by the journal, Servet-i Fünun – the name of which was never evoked separately from that of its founder and editor Ahmet İhsan, all through its half-century existence. Neumann will identify the conception of civilization underlying the journal and attempt to establish the scope of influence this conception wielded.
Assist. Prof. Christoph Neumannn completed his Ph.D. thesis in 1992, and it was published in Turkish, in 2000, under the name Araç Tarih Amaç Tanzimat: Tarih-i Cevdet’in Siyasi Anlamı by the History Foundation (Tarih Vakfı). He currently teaches history in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Bilgi University.

Practices of Literacy in Early Modern Ottoman Empire: The Dervishes
Terzioglu explains that the role of reading and writing among the Ottoman Sufis went much further than a simple transmission of the principles of Sufism. Drawing on the personal notebooks of three Sufi masters from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries respectively, she will show that this relationship varied greatly among individual Sufis as well.
Assist. Prof. Derin Terzioğlu obtained a joint Ph.D. from the Department of History and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University in 1999. She currently teaches history at Boğaziçi University.

Publishing Houses of Bab-ı Ali
In this lecture, İşli recounts the history of the publishing houses and bookstores founded in the Bab-ı Ali district, which was the center of Turkish publishing from the end of the 19th to the end of the 20th centuries.
Emin Nedret Isli, obtained an MA in Ancient Turkish Literature from Istanbul University in 1991. He has written articles for magazines such as, Kitap-lık, Sanat Dünyamız, Cogito, Tarih ve Toplum, Toplumsal Tarih, Arkitekt, Albüm, İstanbul, P, Tombak, Müteferrika, Simurg, Dergah and Kapalıçaşı. He currently deals in second-hand books.
