Prof. Serap Kurbanoğlu / March 31, 2008 / 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Often called an “information society,” the most striking feature of contemporary society is that it is in constant flux. Globalization, as well as economic, technological, social and scientific advances  trigger change. On the one hand, this has provided individuals with countless opportunities, but on the other, it has modified the knowledge and skills they need. In our day, a college degree is no longer enough and even individuals who have completed their studies are forced to keep learning. In the information age, there is a need for “computer literate”   people who possess the skills to keep learning all through their lives and can benefit from available technologies to access information from different sources, process this information and share it with others. In other words, the members of an information society have to keep close track of contemporary developments and acquire the knowledge, performance and skills that will facilitate any necessary adaptations they have to make in their own lives. Computer literacy is the key to lifelong learning and lifelong learning is the only way to handle change.
