Activities - A history of the paper money

The Exhibition of the Paper Money from the Ottoman Period to our Days
December 18, 1998 - March 20, 1999

The exhibition relates 160 years of the history of banknotes dating from the Tanzimat and from the Turkish Republic under a numismatic vision and reflecting the periods where they were in circulation. Invitation to travelling through more than one century, the exhibition also displays through 162 single specimens some common used objects, some photographs and some musics from each period, allowing us to meet with the social, artistic and political atmosphere, to remind some figures of each period, and to bright up some moments of our past.

The exhibition, organised in collaboration of the Ottoman Bank, the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey and the Economic and Social History Foundation of Turkey, opened from 18th December 1998 to 20th March 1999 à Istanbul and from the 9th April to 15th May 1999 in Ankara, in the Modern Art Centre of the Cankaya Municipality and welcomed 60.000 visitors in the two cities.
