Prof. Christopher Clay, from the Economic History Department
of University of Bristol was awarded on the book category
with his publication where he explores the reason of Ottoman
bankruptcy, the lack of financial controls and the consequent
gradual accumulation of debt, as well as the role of foreign
bankers and the question of 'exploitative financial imperialism'.
The book, inspired by English and French archives, makes also
a syntesis of the Ottoman Bank archives located abroad.

The master's thesis award was given to Murat Hulkiender with
his thesis supervised by Prof. Ali Akyildiz and approved by
the History Department of Marmara University. The study focuses
on the financial relation of the State in a period beginning
from 1850's to the establishment of the Ottoman Public Debt,
through the Greek Banker George Zarifi.

Foreign Loans and Observatory Commitees.
As to the scientific paper, the jury awarded a joint study
of Dr. Sevket Kamil Akar from
the Economy Department of Istanbul University and Huseyin
Al, auditor at the Turkish Treasury. They analysed in their
paper the purpose, activities and function of the Observatory
Commitees.

The Jury Special Price
John Karatzoglou, "The Imperial Ottoman Bank in Salonica, the first 25 Years (1864-1890)", 2001.
The Jury Special Price was given to John Karatzoglou from
Salonica, manager in the private sector and doctorate student
at the University of Sheffield. Based on Ottoman Bank Istanbul
Archives, his study is an endouvor to restore the atmosphere
in Salonica at the first 25 years after the establishment
of the Imperial Ottoman Bank's branch in the city.
During the ceremony, the awards were distributed by Roberta
Sneider, the General Secretary of the European Association of Banking and Financial History e.V., Orhan Silier, the General Secretary of
the History Foundation of Turkey, Turgay Gönensin, the Ottoman
Bank General Manager and Ergun Özen, the Garanti Bank General
Manager.
