Activities - Contributions of the Camondo Family

The Isaac Camondo Bank Co. which they founded in 1815 for the financing of the Ottoman Empire during the Crimean War, the shares which they held in the Chirket-i Hayriye (Ottoman Navigation Society) and in the Tramway Society of Constantinople, their contribution to the 6th Municipal Circle were the most remarkable undertakings of the family.

The Camondos financed several buildings, which left their traces in the modernization of the Ottoman city. The building of Naval Forces in Kasimpasa, the Galata Residence, the hans (Camondo Han, Büyükada Han, Saatçi Han, Latif Han, Lacivert Han, Yakut Han, Kuyumcular Han, Lüleci Han, Gül Han) and the Camondo Stairs of the Bank Streets are the most important edifices, which remained from the Camondos.

The contribution of the family to culture and arts continued during their life in Paris. The foundation of the Théâtre national in Champs Elysées, the grant of a collection of impressionist paintings to the Musée du Louvre, the Nissim de Camondo Museum, which collects the artistic objects of the 18th century, are some of their contributions.
