Mission

In the parallel way to the Bank Archive, a specialized Library, established within the Centre, aims at collecting and conserving works on economic, financial, political and social history of the Ottoman Empire after the Tanzimat Edict, and of modern Turkey in order to meet the needs of the scholarly community.

The current collection comprises more than 7.000 monographs and 700 titles of serials in major European languages and those of the Middle East. The holdings contain also grey literature and audio-visual material. The Library has the distinctive feature of fulfilling a double function: On the one hand, it gives access to the Bank Archive; on the other hand, it helps to refine the research in the same space thanks to secondary sources. This integrity among the Library and the Archive is also reinforced by technical means: it is allowed to the researcher to have access directly to the digital forms of the original documents and to take a copy for its own use in case of necessity.

Constitution of the Collection

The holdings of the library are gradually expanding through new acquisitions, exchanges and donation in its specific fields. The larger part of the collection relates to the social, economic and political history of Turkey starting from the 19th century. But the Centre, member of the European Association of Banking and Financial History e.V., cooperates also with other bank libraries and archives in Europe. In that sense, the library tries to be as broad as possible in scope and includes economic and financial history and urban spaces in general with a strong emphasis on Europe, the Middle East and Northern Africa. Works related to the history of the Ottoman Bank and its functioning are included in the collection.

The Centre follows for its regular acquisitions local or foreign well-known publishers' catalogs. Also, it participates in auctions organised in Turkey in order to acquire "rare books" clarifying the Ottoman period. On the other hand, the Centre has adopted an exchange policy and collaborates with other local or foreign centres or institutions working in the similar interest domains in order to enrich its collection. The library is grateful to private parties or to institutions, who would like to contribute to the development of the Library through their donations.

Classification of the Collection

The collection is classified according to international rules. The library uses Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules II, Dewey Decimal Classification (20th ed.) and Library of Congress Subject Headings (23rd ed.). The administration of the library and the access to the collection are enabled through a software, Yordam 2001. The library catalog is also available on our web site.
