Library

In the parallel way to the Bank Archive, a specialized Library, established within the Centre, is aimed at collecting and conserving works on economic, finance, banking, political and social history related to the Ottoman Empire and the Republican period. The collection has already reached 5.000 books. The Library has the distinctive feature of fulfilling a double function: On the one hand, it gives access to the Bank Archive; on the other hand, it helps to refine the research in the same space thanks to the secondary sources. This integrity among the Library and the Archive is also reinforced by technical means: it is allowed to the researcher to have access directly to the digital forms of the original documents and to take a copy for its own use in case of necessity.

Constitution of the Collection

The collection of the Library is enriched by means of acquisitions, gifts and exchanges. The Centre, member of the European Association for Banking History, makes inquiries about the activities and the recent publications related to other archives and libraries working in the similar domains. Its permanent contacts with local and foreign well-known publishers permit to follow the recent literature. Also, the Centre participates in auctions organised in Turkey in order to acquire "rare books" written in Ottoman Turkish or in other languages and clarifying the Ottoman period.

The gifts consist of different works donated by people or institutions, who would like to contribute to the development of the Library. These donations are integrated in the collection insofar as they concern one of the interest domains of the Library. Works related to the history of the Ottoman Bank and its old functioning are included in the collection. On the other hand, the Centre has adopted an exchange policy and collaborates with other local or foreign centres or institutions working in the similar interest domains in order to enrich its collection.

Classification Project

A classification project has been undertaken in the Library of the Centre from January 2000. The works are classified according to Dewey Decimal System. The bibliographic notices are constituted in accordance with Anglo-Saxon norms and are completed by subject headings conforming to the Library of Congress standards.

Computerization

The computerization of the Library catalogue reassembling printed and audio-visual materials has been achieved recently. The computerized catalog, available in the Library, and which is also displayed on our web site, permits to identify and to locate the document in question and to make inquiries about its access. The subject headings, created in accordance with the content of the works, facilitate the access of the researchers to the sources going beyond the simple data, which contains only its bibliographic notice and serve as a reference point for different researches.
